We believe that assessment can be a powerful tool for students, families and schools to support comfort, learning and growth.
Families coming to us have often been struggling for some time with questions about a range of concerns, which may include academic, emotional, behavioral and/or developmental functioning. Typically a number of strategies have been tried – tutoring, therapy, small group instruction, or homework help are all examples– with variable success, and possibly quite a bit of frustration.
Our goal during assessments is to understand the individual student before us – their strengths as well as their challenges, the skills they already have in place, and the skills they need to develop. We then work to craft a report that is clear, readable, and will work in real-world settings. Ideally, teachers and parents should “recognize” their student while reading our reports, and have some ideas to put in place when they have finished.
To accomplish this we look broadly at a number of areas related to learning, and often work collaboratively with a number of different people involved in student’s life, including parents, teachers, tutors, and treatment professionals. We welcome any perspective that will help us develop the best and broadest understanding of a student’s needs, and strategies that might be helpful.
Janice C. C. Lepore, Psy.D.
Dr. Lepore is a Maryland licensed psychologist who has a broad background providing assessment, therapy and consultation services in public and private schools, hospitals and clinics. Working within these multi-disciplinary teams informed Dr. Lepore’s approach to assessment and consultation – services should be individualized, strengths are as important as needs, and reports and recommendations need to be readable, realistic and flexible for different situations and environments. Dr. Lepore feels strongly that student success cannot be measured by grades or test scores alone, and that student comfort, confidence, self-understanding and personal growth are all equally important.
In addition to work with individual students and families, Dr. Lepore participates in a number of professional organizations with the goal of applying psychological science and knowledge to inform educational program development and public policy. Dr. Lepore also enjoys providing consultation services to school communities, and presentations to parent and professional groups on a variety of psychological topics.
Dr. Lepore is currently on a year-long Fellowship from the American Psychological Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, serving on a Congressional staff. The practice is on sabbatical until September, 2024.
